THE POSITION
Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff can offer individuals an
opportunity to continue their career in law enforcement as a Deputy
Sheriff. Applicants must have satisfactorily completed a California Peace
Officer Standards and Training approved Basic P.O.S.T. Academy, or have
successfully completed the Basic Course Equivalency Examination
administered by the State of California Commission of Peace Officer
Standards and Training. Individuals currently employed in other Law
Enforcement agencies or jurisdictions are encouraged to consider this
excellent career opportunity.

Specialized assignments available within the Office of the Sheriff may
include the following:

Valid California Motor Vehicle
Operator’s License. |
| Education: |
Possession of a high school diploma,
G.E.D. equivalency, or high school proficiency certificate. |
| Training Option: |
1) Possession of a California Basic
P.O.S.T. certificate and experience in law enforcement within the
last three years, OR 2) Successful completion within the last
three years of the California Basic Course equivalency examination
administered by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer
Standards and Training, OR
3) Possession of a valid certificate from a California P.O.S.T.
approved Basic Academy program. Academy certificates are valid for
three years from the date of completion of the academy program
unless extended by employment as a full-time Peace Officer or Level
1 Reserve. (Applicable certificates should be attached to the
application at the time of filing.) |

| Physical: |
Ability
to meet such health standards as may be established by the County
Medical Consultant.

| Vision: |
20/200 each eye if wearing soft contact lenses;
corrected to 20/20 each eye. Persons undergoing Radial Keratotomy or
similar surgery are not eligible until one year after surgery. |
| Hearing: |
Must not
have suffered a hearing loss of over 25 decibels in the 500, 1000,
and 2000 frequency range in each ear. |
SELECTION PROCESS
Agility Test: The agility test consists of
dragging a 165 lb. dummy 30 feet in 15 seconds. The second part of the
agility is completing a 500 yard run and scaling a 6 foot wall. Both the
run and the wall must be completed within 2 minutes. You need to be in
good physical condition to complete the Physical Agility test so you
should begin to prepare immediately.
Oral interview: The examination will consist of an oral
interview conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez,
California. The Q.A.B. will evaluate each candidate’s job-related
qualifications in such areas as motivation to pursue a law enforcement
career; ability to utilize sound judgment in stressful or life-threatening
situations; ability to effectively interact with individuals from diverse
socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds; ability to communicate effectively
both orally and in writing and ability to understand and apply basic laws
and concepts such as those taught in a California Basic Academy.
Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the
Board Members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 100%).
Background Requirements: (1) a thorough background
investigation, a polygraph examination and psychological testing shall be
conducted according to the specification of the State of California
Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training; and (2) shall not have
been convicted of a felony in this or any other state or in any federal
jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal
jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state.
VETERAN’S PREFERENCE CREDITS
Veterans who have received an honorable
discharge and disabled veterans may be allowed an additional 5% of their
total earned score (providing the exam is
otherwise
successfully completed). To obtain this
credit, veterans MUST provide
a DD214 that indicates the applicant received an honorable discharge or
proof of disability ATTACHED TO THEIR APPLICATION AT THE TIME OF
FILING.

Salary: |
Deputy Sheriff-Recruits are paid during
their training period at the Basic Academy. Upon successful
completion of Academy training, graduates will be sworn in as Peace
Officers, promoted to Deputy Sheriff, and receive a salary increase
of approximately 25%. Advancement to the higher steps of the Deputy
Sheriff salary range is in accordance with the County Salary
Ordinance and the County Personnel Management Regulations. |

Incentives: |
After their first year, Deputy Sheriffs
are eligible for an additional pay differential based on P.O.S.T.
Certificates. P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificates earn two and
one-half percent (2 ½ %). P.O.S.T. Advanced Certificates earn an
additional two and one-half percent (2 ½%). Persons speaking a
second language may qualify for bilingual differential pay of $80
per month, in selected positions. |
| Shift Work: |
Deputy Sheriffs work a variety of hours
and shifts depending on the particular assignment, including 3/12,
5/8 and 9/80. Time and one-half
is paid for approved overtime worked. |
| Uniforms: |
Deputy Sheriffs are paid a uniform
allowance of $800 annually. |
| Bilingual Pay: |
$80.00/month is selected positions. |
| Savings: |
A credit union is available
which offers systematic savings and loans at low interest rates.

| Holidays: |
An average of thirteen (13) paid
holidays per year. |
| Vacation: |
Two (2) weeks vacation each year for
the first five (5) years, three (3) weeks vacation for 5-10, further
increases beyond 10 years. |
| Sick Leave: |
Twelve (12) working days sick leave are
accumulated each year. Credits are accumulated indefinitely. |
| Insurance: |
Prepaid medical and hospital plans
including dental and life insurance are available to employees and
their dependents. Employees may select a health plan, dental plan,
or health and dental plan through CalPers. A term life insurance
policy is included with any health and/or dental plan enrollment. |
| Retirement: |
Approximately 3% per year at age 50.
Deputy Sheriffs are members of the Safety Service Retirement
established under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 with
reciprocity with PERS.
