The Background |
The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff enjoys an outstanding
reputation as one of the most professional, progressive agencies in the
United States. In addition to operating the most innovative detention
facilities in the country, the Office of the Sheriff provides patrol
services throughout the county including five contract cities for which it
provides total police services. Many other specialized assignments are
also available. As a department of 1,000+ employees, over 750 of
which are sworn, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff continues
to grow and progress, providing excellent opportunities in career
development for its deputies.
The written examination consists of 95 multiple choice
questions which cover Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Problem
Solving/Reasoning Ability. Candidates successfully completing the written
portion of the exam will then complete the Physical Agility test, so
please bring appropriate clothing and athletic shoes for this portion of
the exam.

AGILITY
TEST
You need to be in
good physical condition to complete the Physical Agility test so you
should begin to prepare immediately.
The agility test consists of:
| Drag 165 lb. dummy 30 ft. and run back in 15 sec. |
| Scale a 6-foot wall in 12 seconds |
| Run 500 yards in 1 minute, 45 seconds |
Candidates successfully completing the written and agility portion of
the examination process will be scheduled for an oral interview which will
evaluate such job-related factors as motivation, interpersonal skills,
problem-solving ability, use of sound judgment and oral communication
skills. Applicants must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of
the Board Members to pass the oral interview.

Candidates must successfully complete both events.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:
(1) a
thorough background investigation, a polygraph examination,
psychological testing, and medical examination shall be conducted to the specification of the State
of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training; and (2)
shall not have been convicted of a felony in this or any other state or in
any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any
federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this
state.
