I am proud to work for an organization that sets the standard for law enforcement.  With the variety of assignments, challenges and promotional opportunities I’ve experienced, the first 20 years of my career has passed faster than I ever anticipated.  I have come to realize, if I work another twenty years, I still won’t experience everything our organization has to offer.  An individual in the Contra Costa Office of the Sheriff is limited only by their personal commitment to the law enforcement profession.

Deputy Lance Morrison

My name is Lance Morrison, and I am a proud member of the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office. While many deputies find their way to the Sheriff’s Office at a much younger age, I took a distinctly different route. I enjoyed a wonderful career at the Newark Police Department in California’s Northern Bay Area. During that period I had the opportunity to do many of the things that attract people to law enforcement. I was an investigator, a sergeant, a S.W.A.T. Team Leader, and a Commander for a regional state drug task force. I was also fortunate enough to have risen through the ranks, ultimately serving as second in command as our Operations Captain. After acquiring a Master’s Degree and attending the F.B.I. National Academy, I thought I had gotten the most out of my career. There was one nagging issue—I was approaching the PERS maximum for retirement, and the fire in my law enforcement furnace was still burning. Like so many police officers who reach ’50-something,’ I was surprised to find how energized I still felt. That is where the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office came in.

I had long been aware of the reputation of this great organization. I knew that no other sheriff’s office offered their sheer size and diversity. Like I said, my fire is still burning, and assignments such as a marine patrol, or an opportunity to work in one of several contract cities are very compelling. When I got serious about making a move, I went to the source. I spoke with dozens of current employees at all levels within the department. The pride of affiliation and mutual respect their deputies, sergeants and commanders had for one another was very impressive. In the end, the men and women of the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office were their best commercial. I knew I wanted to make my second professional home there.

If you want to take the advice of a seasoned law enforcement professional, you would do well to apply for the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office. The opportunities far surpass those of other sheriff offices, and certainly those of middle-sized or smaller municipal agencies. We have it all. Take a look at our on-line application process. The Recruitment Office is extremely responsive. Experienced candidates stand to do very well with incentives, and a very generous signing bonus. If you are like me, and you find yourself nowhere near couch potato status, keep that fire burning! Your family will enjoy enhanced security and our Safety Service Retirement is the perfect complement to extending or augmenting your PERS benefits.

Lieutenant Mike Burton

My name is Mike Burton and I have been with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office for 14 years. Because the Sheriff’s Office is so diverse; I have had one great assignment after the next and afforded great promotional opportunities.

Picture of Lt. Mike BurtonAs a Deputy Sheriff I worked Detention, Transportation, Patrol, Specialized Street Patrol Team (J Team), Special Investigations Unit (vice and narcotics) and S.W.A.T.

After 10 years I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to the Custody Services Bureau and as a S.W.A.T. Team Leader. My next assignment was to be part of a team that built a state of the art Law Enforcement Training Center and as the Basic Academy Coordinator.

After two years I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned as a Watch Commander in the Office of Emergency Services and as the Assistant S.W.A.T. Commander. I am currently the Academy Commander at the Law Enforcement Training Center and Assistant S.W.A.T Commander.

In my role as Academy Commander I have successfully trained more than 400 Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs in eight California Counties. I have been afforded the opportunity to build a Training Center from the ground up. Including the creation of the finest fitness centers in the state.

As the Assistant S.W.A.T Commander I am part of one of the largest and respected S.W.A.T. teams in the state. I am extremely proud of the fact that I was able to promote from Deputy to Sergeant and now Lieutenant and never left the team. That would never be the case in a smaller agency.

As a Sheriff’s Lieutenant I have the ability to run a Patrol Station as an Area Commander, a Detention Facility, be a Watch Commander, an Assistant Division Commander or a Chief of Police in one of our five Contract Cities as well as numerous other diverse and challenging assignments..

If you want to be part of an agency that promotes lateral and upward mobility; an agency that’s foundation is professionalism and leadership; then the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is where you belong!!

Call me direct if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you. (925)427-8236.
